Proverbs 23

Verse 1

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, 1 consider diligently what is before thee:

  1. Eat with sobriety.

Verse 2

1 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou art a man given to appetite.

  1. Bridle your appetite, as if by force and violence.

Verse 3

Be not desirous of his dainties: 1 for they are deceitful food.

  1. For often the rich when they bid their inferiors to their tables, it is not for the love they bear them, but for their own secret purposes.

Verse 4

Labour not to be rich: cease from thy own 1 wisdom.

  1. Bestow not the gifts that God has given you, to get worldly riches.

Verse 6

Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an 1 evil eye, neither desire thou his delicacies:

  1. That is, covetous, as contrary a good eye is taken for liberal as in

Verse 8

The 1 morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

  1. He will not cease till he has done you some harm, and his flattering words will come to no use.

Verse 14

Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from 1 hell.

  1. That is, from destruction.

Verse 18

For surely there is an end; 1 and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

  1. The prosperity of the wicked will not continue.

Verse 19

Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thy heart in the 1 way.

  1. In the observation of God's commandments.

Verse 23

Buy 1 the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

  1. Spare no cost for truths sake, neither depart from it for any gain.

Verse 26

My son, give me 1 thy heart, and let thy eyes observe my ways.

  1. Give yourself wholly to wisdom.

Verse 28

She also lieth in wait as for a prey, 1 and increaseth the transgressors among men.

  1. She seduces many and causes them to offend God.

Verse 30

They that tarry long at the wine; they that go 1 to seek mixed wine.

  1. Who by art make wine stronger and more pleasant.

Verse 33

Thy 1 eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.

  1. That is, drunkenness will bring you to whoredom.

Verse 34

And thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the 1 sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

  1. In such great danger will you be.

Verse 35

They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will 1 seek it yet again.

  1. Though drunkenness makes them more insensible then beasts, yet they can not refrain.
